Glens Falls Hospital West Lobby
Glens Falls Hospital
Glens Falls, NY

Glens Falls Hospital, like many hospitals, has multiple entrances that have developed over time with new additions.  In the 1970’s, the West Building was opened with a new “West Lobby” with registration and elevators accessing the main hall of the 432 bed hospital.  That lobby has remained the “working” entrance and lobby for the hospital.  However, in 2005 the new patient “Tower Building” was opened to modernize and expand patient units.  The Tower Building added its own gracious lobby, also on the west side with a connector hall to the earlier West Lobby.

Multiple lobbies often add confusion to wayfinding, as well as making it more difficult for patients and visitors to find the services needed to access the hospital.  With the Tower Lobby dominating the front exterior facade and the West Lobby more concealed, many patients and visitors would first enter the Tower Building, requiring direction to the West Lobby.  We addressed this with the addition of a new exterior canopy and signage that can be identified by hospital staff and visitors as the appropriate destination.

Inside, we created an information desk, patient registration stations and a new waiting room with toilet rooms which are more evident and available.  Imaging which sees a large number of ambulatory patients has a new waiting room and check-in area just beyond the main lobby.

Staff and security report that the hospital lobby circulation, services and visitor directions are greatly improved.  While photographing this project, it was rewarding to hear patients and their families remark to each other how attractive and improved the new West Lobby is with facilities that they had been missing.
